Youth and the 2008 Presidential Election



PROVIDENCE, RI—With the Democratic and Republican National Conventions behind us and the presidential election just weeks away, WKCD continues to beat the drum for the youth vote. Some believe it may be the deciding factor in the November election—if youth vote and get out the vote in record numbers.

For the past six months, WKCD has featured regular reports, audio commentaries, and profiles of young activists from journalists at Y-Press, a youth-led news bureau in Indianapolis.

Here, we add:

HeadCount

Created in 2004, HeadCount is a nonprofit devoted to registering potential voters at concerts. Andy Bernstein and Marc Brownstein, co-chairs, saw a need for youth engagement and decided to combine that with their love of music and the concert community. In the last four years, HeadCount has registered over 70,000 voters, with the help of volunteers.

Hip Hop Caucus

Established in 2004, the Hip Hop Caucus politically educates and engages young people or the “hip hop generation.” The group attracts young people through working with hip-hop artists, specifically T.I, the Hip Hop Caucus celebrity spokesperson.

KidsVotingUSA

Works with schools and communities to provide youth an authentic voting experience. Participating students visit official polling sites on Election Day and cast a ballot similar in content to the official ballot. Involves 4.3 million students in 20,000 voter precincts.

Millennial Politics

Millennial Politics.com is dedicated to educating and motivating people about youth activism and the politics of the Millennial Generation (Americans 25 and younger). The site provides links to other youth activist groups and resources, hosts active discussion boards for young people, and distributes a weekly newsletter. “Team Millennial” is a group of 200 young people working together to write a book about the activism of the generation and the issues discussed at the site.

Rock the Vote

Engages youth in the political process by incorporating the entertainment community and youth culture into its activities. Coordinates voter registration drives, get-out-the-vote events, and voter education efforts.

ServiceVote 2008

ServiceVote 2008 is Youth Service America's campaign to engage young people in the political process. It will include six town hall-style candidate forums, with youth asking the questions, in conjunction with service-learning events to address a specific community need and interactive and social networking features and user-generated content that allow young people to share ideas on how to engage candidates during the election and beyond.

Your Three Cents targets America's youth to stand up and speak out on what is going on across the nation and in their lives. This site gives everyone the opportunity to ask and answer questions pertaining to the political world state of affairs. Not affiliated with any party, religion or gender, this site is a way for kids, Generation Y, as well as young adults to say what they really think.

Vote 18

Vote 18 is an organization that brings an interactive game to teach the history of voting to middle school and high school students. During one class period, it teaches students the importance of voting and being politically active in their communities.
